TechFlow News: The Electricité du Laos (EDL) has announced it will no longer supply power to cryptocurrency mining operations in the country. In a notice issued on August 24, EDL stated that Laos experienced dry and extremely hot weather during the first half of 2023, leading to high electricity demand while hydropower plants struggled to generate sufficient power.
EDL also noted that 95% of the country’s electricity is generated by hydropower plants through its system. EDL plans to prioritize local power supply and provide substantial electricity to Thailand's Electricity Generating Authority (EGAT) to support Thailand's grid during the upcoming dry season in 2024.
Meanwhile, Laotian authorities have indicated that cryptocurrency mining operations have failed to repay their debts.
