TechFlow news, according to The Paper, five major U.S. 3D content industry companies—Apple, NVIDIA, Pixar, Adobe, and Autodesk—have jointly formed the Alliance for OpenUSD (AOUSD). The alliance will develop a written specification detailing the features of OpenUSD.
Although the "metaverse" was not explicitly discussed at the launch event, these companies are promoting one of the key characteristics of an open metaverse: by enhancing interoperability among 3D tools and data, the alliance will enable developers and content creators to describe, compose, and simulate large-scale 3D projects, and build an ever-expanding range of 3D products and services.
OpenUSD is an open data format developed by Pixar Animation Studios, designed to facilitate collaboration across teams in large-scale 3D workflows, and to share 3D objects and environment information for use in AR and VR projects.
