He was 75. According to Spain's El Mundo newspaper, citing a statement from Catalonia’s justice department, prison staff attempted resuscitation but were unsuccessful. Reuters confirmed the department’s statement indicating the death was likely a suicide.
McAfee was also a cryptocurrency enthusiast known for his wild and eccentric price predictions. His most famous claim came in July 2017 when he predicted that Bitcoin would reach $1 million by 2020, promising to livestream eating his genitals if it did not. McAfee later launched his own privacy-focused token called "Ghost."
