TechFlow reports, July 9, OpenAI CEO Altman stated that before releasing the latest artificial intelligence model to the public, the company made several adjustments during consultations with the Trump administration.
Altman stated that in the weeks leading up to the full release of GPT-5.6, OpenAI engaged in collaborative two-way communication with senior U.S. officials such as Commerce Secretary Lutnick and Treasury Secretary Bessent.
Under pressure from the government to release in phases, the new model series was initially open only to specific partners.
After OpenAI stated it received approval from U.S. government leadership, GPT-5.6 is scheduled to open to the public on Thursday.
Altman did not detail the specific adjustments OpenAI made during this process, but stated that the government is testing the new model and looking for potential issues.
"I think as long as the process is understandable, fair, and swift, it is a good thing. The government seems to indeed agree with these goals, I guess the next time, the next model will go more smoothly. We understand the process and are clearer on how to respond." (Jin10)
