TechFlow News, March 31: Block published a post outlining how it is using artificial intelligence to reconstruct corporate organizational structures—replacing traditional hierarchical management with “company agents.”
The article notes that, from the Roman legions to modern enterprises, hierarchical systems have essentially functioned as information routing protocols, constrained by the upper limit of human managerial span. Block argues that AI is now, for the first time, capable of assuming coordination functions traditionally performed by hierarchy—continuously maintaining an enterprise’s “world model” and thereby breaking an organizational constraint that has persisted for two millennia.
At the architectural level, Block streamlines its organization into three role types: individual contributors (ICs), responsible for building and operating systems across layers; directly responsible individuals (DRIs), empowered to allocate resources across teams; and “player-coaches,” who simultaneously execute business operations and cultivate talent—eliminating permanent middle-management positions.
At the data layer, Block leverages transactional data from both sides of transactions—via Square and Cash App—to construct an “economic map” covering merchants and consumers, serving as the core signal source driving the intelligent layer. This intelligent layer can automatically compose foundational capabilities—including payments, lending, and card issuance—and proactively deliver personalized financial solutions to users, without requiring product managers to predefine roadmaps.
