TechFlow News, March 18: According to The Block, a cross-party parliamentary committee in the UK released a report urging the government to immediately ban the use of cryptocurrencies for political donations, citing an “unacceptably high risk” to electoral integrity. The committee recommended implementing a binding suspension—via amendments to the Representation of the People Act—until a comprehensive regulatory framework is in place.
In its 47-page report, the committee noted that cryptocurrency transactions can circumvent traditional financial oversight through mixers, privacy coins, and cross-chain hops. It further highlighted persistent gaps in verifying donors’ sources of funds when converting cryptocurrencies into fiat currency. The report also specifically addressed micro-donations below the £500 (approximately $667) disclosure threshold, warning that AI tools could split large transfers into multiple £499 donations to evade scrutiny.
According to data from the UK Electoral Commission, total political donations in the UK reached nearly £65 million (approximately $86.7 million) in 2025.
