TechFlow news: On January 25, according to South Korean media outlet Ohmy News, the Gwangju District Prosecutors’ Office recently reportedly lost a large quantity of Bitcoin seized and stored as evidence in criminal cases. The exact amount of Bitcoin lost has not been disclosed, but it is understood to be worth hundreds of billions of Korean won. The prosecution is conducting an internal investigation. The loss was discovered during a routine inspection of seized financial assets for anomalies; at the time, prosecutors were examining passwords related to the seized Bitcoin stored on portable storage devices (USB drives). A prosecution official stated: “We learned that the incident occurred during a routine inspection of the seized Bitcoin, when personnel inadvertently accessed a so-called ‘fake (fraudulent) website.’ Internal discussions within the prosecution estimate the value of the lost Bitcoin at up to 70 billion Korean won.” A Gwangju District Prosecutors’ Office official, responding to media inquiries, said: “We cannot confirm this matter.”
