What Is Hardness?
The Ethereum Foundation recently published a blog post outlining three protocol cluster priorities: Scaling, User Experience (UX), and Hardness.
Each addresses a distinct requirement for Ethereum’s long-term success. Scaling ensures the network can handle global-scale demand; UX ensures people can actually use it; and Hardness ensures Ethereum retains the core properties that make it worth using—even as it grows.
Hardness refers to a system’s ability to remain reliable over time. The Hardness initiative is a protocol-level commitment to uphold Ethereum’s foundational guarantees: open source, censorship resistance, privacy, security, permissionlessness, and trust minimization.
These principles have existed since Ethereum’s inception.
Ethereum exists to provide neutral infrastructure for those who truly need it—even if that means being harder, slower, or less convenient. In practice, this means ensuring Ethereum continues operating even when centralized systems fail.
Who needs these properties? Users in sanctioned countries, journalists protecting their sources, organizations requiring neutral settlement infrastructure, and institutions seeking to reduce counterparty risk.
Why Focus on Hardness Now?
Ethereum is advancing major upgrades to throughput and usability. Yet every improvement risks taking shortcuts—such as centralizing infrastructure or introducing trusted intermediaries.
Hardness exists precisely to ensure Ethereum responds to network demands without compromising its values.
Today, individuals and institutions rely on these Ethereum guarantees—not as ideals, but as necessities. This makes Hardness an increasingly critical focus area.
What Does Hardness Look Like in Practice?
Within the Ethereum Foundation, the Hardness initiative is advanced by three individuals, each with distinct responsibilities:
- Thomas Thiery: Censorship resistance and permissionlessness, focused on the protocol layer
- Fredrik Svantes: Security, with emphasis on privacy and trust minimization
- Parithosh Jayanthi: Infrastructure, upgrades, and resilience of sensitive parts of the Ethereum protocol
Hardness spans multiple domains:
Beyond technical development, part of the Hardness effort involves helping more people understand and value these core properties. The team also collaborates closely with work in zero-knowledge (ZK) cryptography, privacy, scaling, UX, and security—including initiatives like Trillion Dollar Security (which focuses more on wallets and application-layer security)—to ensure improvements accelerate progress without weakening security or decentralization.
Concrete work includes:
Network Resilience: Improving tooling, testing, and fuzzing to detect vulnerabilities early and ensure rapid recovery from failures.
User Protection: Reducing preventable fund losses caused by phishing and malicious authorizations.
Privacy: Advancing private transfers and anonymous broadcasting at the protocol layer, enabling strong privacy guarantees without leaving L1.
Maintaining Neutrality: Eliminating single points of failure at the network edge to preserve neutrality and resilience against selective interference.
Long-Term Preparedness: Post-quantum cryptography is not yet an urgent threat—but it is inevitable, and preparation must begin now.
Fallback and Recovery Modes: As throughput increases, the protocol must be able to slow down and stabilize during anomalies, enabling self-healing rather than cascading failure.
Incident Response Readiness: Developing shared, public emergency playbooks so the ecosystem can respond quickly and transparently in extreme scenarios.
Measuring Reality: Establishing metrics to assess the ecosystem’s current level of censorship resistance, the proportion of users capable of private transactions, and where trust assumptions are quietly creeping in.
