TechFlow news, September 17 — According to Fortune, court documents have revealed further details about the Coinbase data breach. The lawsuit indicates that the primary suspect, Ashita Mishra, was an employee at TaskUs’s service center in Indore, India. Her phone contained data from over 10,000 Coinbase customers.
She is accused of stealing confidential customer data—including Social Security numbers and bank account information—starting in September 2024, and selling this information to hackers. The hackers then used the data to impersonate Coinbase employees and trick victims into surrendering their cryptocurrency. The scheme involved multiple TaskUs employees, including team leads and operations managers, with participants receiving $200 per photo obtained.
The breach has affected more than 69,000 customers and is expected to cost Coinbase up to $400 million in losses. Notably, the lawsuit states that the data theft began in September 2024, whereas Coinbase previously claimed the breach occurred in late December.
