TechFlow, September 9 — According to Hong Kong media Oriental Daily News, Hong Kong law enforcement authorities have arrested two local men suspected of installing mining rigs at a care facility for people with disabilities in Cheung Sha Wan to mine cryptocurrencies, causing the facility to incur additional electricity costs of up to HK$9,000. The two have been charged with electricity theft, and the case is still under investigation.
It is understood that electricity theft is a serious offense in Hong Kong. Under the Theft Ordinance, any person who dishonestly uses electricity without proper authorization, or dishonestly causes waste of electricity or diverts electricity elsewhere, commits an offense punishable by up to five years' imprisonment.
