TechFlow news, July 29 — According to a recent CNBC survey, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, former Federal Reserve Governor Kevin Warsh, and National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett have emerged as the leading candidates to succeed current Fed Chair Jerome Powell, with support rates of 24%, 24%, and 22% respectively.
The survey indicates improving economic prospects. The expected risk of recession has decreased from 53% in May to 31%, and GDP growth for 2026 is projected at 2.2%. The unemployment rate is expected to rise slightly from the current 4.1% to 4.4%, where it will stabilize.
Analysts surveyed expect two rate cuts this year, with the federal funds rate potentially falling to 3.9% by year-end. 84% of respondents believe the president will not remove Powell before his term ends in May 2026.
