TechFlow news, June 8 — According to Forbes, the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) recently issued a warning urging smartphone users to beware of a nationwide scam in which fraudsters impersonate FBI and other law enforcement officials to trick victims into sending money.
The scammers use "spoofed caller ID" technology to make it appear as if calls are coming from an FBI phone number, falsely claiming that victims will be arrested unless they make immediate payments. The FBI emphasized that it never demands payment over the phone to avoid criminal charges.
Such scams have become a global industry, with fraudsters using intimidation tactics to demand payments via prepaid cards, wire transfers, cash mailed through postal services, or cryptocurrency ATMs. The FBI advises hanging up immediately if receiving such a call and filing a report at IC3.gov.
