TechFlow news — On March 14, according to Decrypt, a man from California was sentenced to 87 months in federal prison for laundering proceeds from the sale of MDMA on the dark web using Bitcoin.
John Khuu, a 29-year-old resident of San Francisco, pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit money laundering and operating an unlicensed money transmitting business. According to Texas law enforcement, Khuu imported MDMA from Germany and sold it across various dark web marketplaces, accepting payments in Bitcoin. He then converted the Bitcoin stored in seller accounts into U.S. dollars, laundering the funds through "hundreds of transactions and dozens of financial accounts."
A 2024 risk assessment by the U.S. Department of the Treasury found that while traditional money laundering methods remain dominant, drug-related transactions involving cryptocurrency are increasingly common and becoming more sophisticated.
