TechFlow news — On March 6, Binance founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) posted on social media about a recent conversation with a founder discussing whether an AI project should choose to build on a Layer 1 (L1) or Layer 2 (L2) blockchain. "For a new AI project, does it really matter whether it's built on L1 or L2? The core of an AI project isn't to develop a better blockchain, but rather to leverage blockchain to support the AI economy.
Having your own L1 feels more sovereign, more decentralized, and so on. But it also means significantly more work—running nodes, validators, etc. You're also somewhat isolated on your own island.
An L2 saves you from all that effort. And it doesn’t seem to leak much value away from the underlying L1 (like Ethereum). You can use DEXs, perpetual contracts, and other existing tools right away.
Is L1 cooler than L2, or vice versa? This is an old debate, but I wonder if sentiment has shifted."
