TechFlow reports on February 10, according to Cointelegraph, Central African Republic President Touadéra announced the launch of an official meme coin called CAR this morning on X platform, describing it as an "experiment" to promote national development. However, the announcement video has been flagged as suspicious by two AI deepfake detection tools. According to GMGN market data, CAR's market capitalization has now surpassed $700 million.
The authenticity of the project has been widely questioned. Two detection models from AI deepfake detection platform Deepware indicate high suspicion regarding the president's video statement, with one model suggesting an 82% probability that the video is a deepfake.
Yokai Ryujin, founder of Unrevealed XYZ, pointed out that the project’s domain was registered only three days ago via Namecheap, using a method inconsistent with standard government procedures. Although domain provider Namecheap has suspended related services, the project website remains active.
In addition, industry insiders have raised concerns about the announcement being released at midnight local time and being conducted in English rather than French, the country's official language—an unusual and illogical choice. Currently, the project's official X account @Carmeme_news has been suspended by the platform.
