TechFlow news — On February 8, CNN reported, citing sources, that Russell Vought, director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), indirectly assumed the role of acting director of the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) on Friday evening. At the same time, officials from Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) deleted the regulatory agency’s X platform account.
The Wall Street Journal first reported that Vought’s new appointment came just one day after he received U.S. Senate confirmation to serve as OMB director. Sources told CNN that DOGE officials have gained administrative access to CFPB systems, including its content management system, the back-end of the agency’s website, and staff activity directories.
On Friday afternoon, Musk posted on X: “CFPB RIP,” accompanied by a tombstone emoji. According to sources, the DOGE team took over and deleted the CFPB’s X account on Friday night. The CFPB homepage appears to have been taken down, showing a 404 error, while other pages remain accessible.
"Everyone is frustrated and angry," a source said regarding the mood within CFPB. Neither the White House nor the CFPB responded to CNN’s requests for comment.
