TechFlow news — On November 15, according to The Block citing Bloomberg, Ilya “Dutch” Lichtenstein was sentenced to five years in prison on November 14 for his involvement in the 2016 Bitfinex exchange hack and the subsequent laundering of stolen funds. The stolen assets were valued at $72 million at the time of the theft and are now worth approximately $10.7 billion, marking the largest asset seizure in U.S. government history.
Prosecutors recommended a reduced sentence due to Lichtenstein’s cooperation during the investigation, including testifying in the Bitcoin Fog case. His wife and co-conspirator, Heather “Razzlekhan” Morgan, is scheduled to be sentenced on November 18. As she played a secondary role in the money laundering scheme, prosecutors have recommended an 18-month prison term. Both pleaded guilty in August 2023 to charges related to money laundering. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, they laundered the funds using cryptocurrency mixers, layered transactions, and darknet markets.
