TechFlow news, November 14 — According to CoinDesk, Montreal police confirmed that the body found on October 30 at Île-de-la-Visitation Park belongs to missing cryptocurrency influencer Kevin Mirshahi. The investigation revealed that the 25-year-old Mirshahi was abducted on June 21 along with three others from an apartment in Montreal; the other three victims were later located. Police have arrested 32-year-old Joanie Lepage and charged her with first-degree murder.
Investigations show that Mirshahi operated a Telegram group called Crypto Paradise Island, which is suspected of manipulating the price of the Marsan (MRS) token. The token was launched on April 14, 2021, and surged to CAD 5.14 within three days, only to crash down to CAD 0.39 on April 18 due to large-scale sell-offs by major holders, causing severe losses for 2,300 members—mostly teenagers aged 16 to 20. Since 2021, the Quebec Financial Markets Authority (AMF) has been investigating the case and has banned Mirshahi from engaging in brokerage or investment advisory activities.
Notably, just last week, Dean Skurka, CEO of publicly traded Canadian crypto holding company WonderFi, was kidnapped and forced to pay approximately $720,000 in ransom for his release. According to statistics compiled by Casa co-founder, there have already been 18 violent crimes globally this year involving cryptocurrencies, including P2P transaction fraud, home invasions, robberies, and murders.
