The Maryland Police Financial Crimes Unit reported receiving multiple reports of such incidents during August and September.
The scammers send emails to potential victims' Gmail accounts containing Google Maps photos of their residences, demanding ransom payments in Bitcoin. The scammers claim to possess damaging information about the victims, such as evidence of viewing pornographic content, and threaten to expose this information unless Bitcoin payments are made. Authorities urge the public to remain vigilant, avoid clicking on suspicious links, refrain from sharing personal information online, and stay calm under pressure. Victims should report the crime to local law enforcement or file a complaint.
