TechFlow reported on September 18 that, according to Bloomberg, the hacker group Dark Angels received a $75 million ransom from pharmaceutical distributor Cencora Inc., setting a record for the largest known cyber extortion payment. Sources indicated the ransom was paid in Bitcoin in three installments in March 2024, after an initial demand of $150 million. Cencora disclosed in its July quarterly report $31.4 million in additional expenses related to the data breach. The company discovered stolen system data in February, including sensitive information such as personal details and medical records. The previous highest-known ransom payment was $40 million paid by insurance firm CNA Financial Corp. in 2021.
