TechFlow report: Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan pleaded in court in Abuja, Nigeria, for permission to undergo back surgery. The 40-year-old Gambaryan, who suffers from a herniated disc, said the lack of proper medical care has led to permanent nerve damage and left him unable to walk. He has been detained in a prison near Abuja since April and previously suffered from pneumonia and malaria. Judge Emeka Nwite ordered prison officials to provide Gambaryan with a wheelchair.
Gambaryan's lawyer, Mark Mordi, filed a new bail application, accusing prison authorities of serious medical neglect that worsened his client's current back condition. Prosecutor Ekene Iheanacho dismissed Gambaryan’s complaints, stating the situation is not as severe as claimed.
The Nigerian Economic and Financial Crimes Commission accuses Gambaryan and Binance of involvement in $35 million worth of currency speculation and money laundering—allegations both have denied. The judge will rule on the bail application on September 4.
