TechFlow news — On September 1, according to Bitcoin.com News, the U.S. Department of Justice announced on August 30, 2024, that Geoffrey K. Auyeung, a 46-year-old resident of Newcastle, Washington, has been charged in connection with a $64 million cryptocurrency money laundering scheme.
Auyeung was arrested on August 12 and faces one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering and nine counts of money laundering through concealment or expenditure. The investigation revealed that Auyeung posed as an escrow agent for oil and gas investments, diverting investor funds into accounts under his control before quickly transferring them overseas or purchasing cryptocurrencies via exchanges such as Gemini, Bitstamp, and Coinbase. Homeland Security Investigations has traced the illicit funds through 74 bank accounts and seized $2.3 million so far. Twenty-two victims have been identified, suffering losses totaling $7.7 million, with potentially more victims yet to be uncovered.
