TechFlow news: Sequoia Capital partner Shaun Maguire stated that Telegram founder Pavel Durov's arrest in France on August 25 should be seen in the context of viewing Durov as a hero, not a villain, despite controversies surrounding the Telegram platform.
He pointed out that Durov founded Telegram with the original intent of resisting authoritarian governments, enabling citizens to communicate across borders and regimes.
Maguire also noted that Telegram has played a significant role in numerous pro-democracy protests over the past decade. While the French government has brought 12 charges against Durov, Maguire believes these allegations could potentially apply to any social media platform.
He urged attention to the case, stating it concerns the future of Western liberal values, and expressed hope that French President Macron would intervene.
