TechFlow news: The OP_CAT upgrade to the Bitcoin network has sparked renewed developer interest in Bitcoin application development. This upgrade could reintroduce a feature originally removed by Satoshi Nakamoto in 2010. At the Bitcoin2024 conference, Bob Bodily, CEO of Bioniq—a gas-free NFT (Ordinals) trading platform on Bitcoin—said hundreds of developers are vocally advocating for the potential benefits of this upgrade.
Bodily is optimistic about Bitcoin Improvement Proposal 420 (BIP 420), which could restore the operation concatenate (OP_CAT) functionality to the Bitcoin network as early as 2025. OP_CAT would introduce smart contract capabilities to Bitcoin and is already available on Bitcoin's Signet testnet.
OP_CAT will enable covenants, enabling technological advancements such as shared unspent transaction outputs (UTXOs), thereby improving scalability for systems like the Lightning Network. Although there is a conservative "status-quo faction" and concerns about unforeseen consequences, Bodily believes that the greater risk lies in keeping the Bitcoin network unchanged.
