TechFlow reports that the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data has completed its investigation into the Worldcoin project. Privacy Commissioner Ada Chung ruled that Worldcoin's operations in Hong Kong violated the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance, and issued an enforcement notice requiring the cessation of collecting citizens' iris and facial images via iris-scanning devices. The investigation found that Worldcoin breached data protection principles under the Ordinance regarding collection, retention, transparency, access to, and correction of personal data. Collecting facial and iris images was deemed neither necessary nor proportionate. The Commissioner also considered Worldcoin's plan to retain personal data for up to 10 years—for training AI models used in identity verification—as excessive and overly prolonged.
