TechFlow reports, according to Reuters, that Portugal's data protection authority, CNPD, has ordered Sam Altman's Worldcoin project to halt the collection of biometric data for 90 days to prevent serious harm to citizens' data protection rights.
Worldcoin uses facial scanning to provide digital identities and free cryptocurrency, with over 4.5 million people already registered.
The regulator stated that more than 300,000 individuals have provided biometric data to Worldcoin, and it has received dozens of complaints regarding the collection of minors' data, insufficient information disclosure, and inability to delete data.
Worldcoin says it complies with all applicable laws and regulations and plans to transition to "self-custody" to give users greater control over their data. CNPD noted the suspension is temporary while further investigation proceeds.
