TechFlow reports that Coinbase Commerce has removed support for native Bitcoin (BTC) and other UTXO-based cryptocurrencies from its merchant payment platform. This change was due to challenges encountered while implementing recent updates to its EVM payment protocol. However, customers with a Coinbase account can still use Bitcoin for payments.
Coinbase co-founder Brian Armstrong said that Commerce has adopted the new EVM payment protocol, enabling payments from self-custody wallets. They believe crypto payments in the future will primarily occur on Layer 2, and they are promoting the use of ERC-20 tokens on Commerce. Customers can still choose to pay using their Coinbase accounts, or even pay directly with Bitcoin. Additionally, they are integrating the Lightning Network into Coinbase to enable commercial Lightning payments in the future. They expect the market for first-layer payments for everyday goods to be minimal.
