TechFlow news, Bitcoin ATM provider Athena Bitcoin plans to integrate the Lightning Network into its 100 crypto ATMs, starting in El Salvador and then expanding across Latin America.
The Lightning Network is a Layer 2 payment protocol that increases withdrawal speed and reduces transaction fees, while decreasing on-chain data load.
CoinATMRadar data shows that only 3.7% of crypto ATMs worldwide currently support this technology.
Athena plans to enable Lightning support for 100 Chivo ATMs in El Salvador by December 2023, with the remaining ATMs to follow in Q1 2024.
Currently, El Salvador has 215 crypto ATMs. The country has legalized Bitcoin and actively supports technological innovation.
