TechFlow news, according to CoinDesk, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) stated that FTX founder SBF should not be allowed to mention Anthropic's recent fundraising activities—his AI company—during his defense.
The DOJ said it has discussed potential issues regarding witness testimony and that both sides have reached agreement on many points. However, one disagreement remains over whether the defense team may discuss Anthropic’s fundraising.
The DOJ claims the $500 million investment in Anthropic in 2022 came from customer funds. The filing states that evidence about the current value of the defendant’s investments should only be admissible to support arguments that FTX customers and/or other victims might eventually receive compensation. The DOJ previously attempted to bar SBF’s defense team from claiming that FTX creditors will recover most or all of their funds.
The filing also notes that whether the defendant believed his investments would ultimately become profitable enough to repay the misappropriated funds is irrelevant to the charges in this case.
It is reported that Anthropic has reached a deal with Amazon worth up to $4 billion and is currently negotiating to raise another $2 billion.
