TechFlow news, according to Bloomberg, Amazon announced it will invest up to $4 billion in AI startup Anthropic to strengthen its competition with rivals in the cloud computing sector. As part of the deal, Amazon employees and cloud customers will gain early access to Anthropic's technology and integrate it into their own operations.
The San Francisco-based startup has also committed to primarily rely on Amazon's cloud services, including using a large number of proprietary chips purchased from the online retail and computing giant to train its future AI models. In a joint interview, the CEOs of Amazon Web Services and Anthropic said the immediate investment would be $1.25 billion, with both parties having the right to trigger an additional $2.75 billion in funding from Amazon.
They declined to disclose how much equity Amazon will now hold in Anthropic or the startup’s latest valuation. Amazon stated it will not receive a board seat and that its stake represents a minority interest.
Anthropic was founded in 2021, raising $124 million in Series A funding that year, and secured $580 million in Series B funding in 2022 led by FTX founder SBF.
