TechFlow news, according to a Bloomberg article published on Thursday, Anguilla is expected to earn up to $30 million from its ".ai" top-level domain, driven by surging interest in artificial intelligence (AI), making the ".ai" domain particularly attractive to tech companies. This is significant for Anguilla's economy, which relies heavily on tourism, especially after being impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Anguilla has been responsible for allocating the ".ai" domain for decades. Since OpenAI launched ChatGPT last year, registrations for ".ai" domains have doubled. Companies including Elon Musk’s xAI, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and many startups in the booming AI sector now own .ai domains.
Revenue generated from ".ai" domain registrations is estimated to represent a notable share of the region's GDP. With Anguilla’s annual GDP reported at $288 million in 2021 according to the latest United Nations data—slightly below the $300 million figure cited—the value of .ai domains could account for approximately 10% of its GDP.
