TechFlow news — According to The Information, two people directly familiar with the effort and a third person familiar with the discussions said Elon Musk has recently been reaching out to AI researchers to discuss forming a new research lab aimed at developing a rival to ChatGPT, the high-profile chatbot created by startup OpenAI.
In recent months, Musk has repeatedly criticized OpenAI for implementing safeguards that prevent ChatGPT from generating text that might offend users. Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015 but later severed ties with the startup. Last year, he described OpenAI's technology as an example of "training AI to be woke." His comments suggest that a competing chatbot would impose fewer restrictions on divisive topics compared to ChatGPT and Microsoft’s recently launched related chatbot.
To lead this initiative, Musk has been recruiting Igor Babuschkin, a researcher who recently left DeepMind, Alphabet’s artificial intelligence division, where he specialized in the type of machine learning models that power chatbots like ChatGPT. In an interview, Babuschkin said that creating a chatbot with fewer content safeguards is not Musk’s goal.
