According to the Asahi Shimbun website, the Bank of Japan is preparing to officially begin pilot testing for a central bank-issued digital currency (CBDC) in the country. After U.S.-based Facebook proposed its privately-led digital currency (Libra) last year, several countries have since started preparations for issuing their own digital currencies. While the Bank of Japan currently has no concrete plans for issuance, it intends to conduct in-depth research on a "digital yen." The start date for the pilot tests has not yet been determined, and Kimura Takeshi stated that cooperation with the private sector will be considered.
