On July 9, Tencent Security Threat Intelligence Center reported detecting a new variant of the EternalBlue downloader trojan. This latest variant uses Python-packaged EXE executable files for attacks—a technique previously employed by the same group at the end of 2018. According to Tencent Security's big data monitoring, the new variant of the EternalBlue downloader has spread rapidly since its emergence, infecting approximately 15,000 servers so far. The compromised systems are ultimately used to download and run Monero mining malware.
