Five hours before the U.S. military’s announcement, journalists obtained radio recordings of the two tankers reporting the attack and requesting assistance. The statement said that U.S. forces imposed a blockade on two Iranian-flagged, empty oil tankers—the SEA STAR III and the SEVDA—on that day, as the vessels were attempting to enter an Iranian port in the Gulf of Oman. A U.S. Navy F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jet assigned to the USS Bush launched precision-guided munitions at the smokestacks of both tankers, disabling their navigation capability.
