TechFlow News, April 2, according to Cryptopolitan, the Russian government has submitted a bill to the State Duma proposing criminal penalties for illegal cryptocurrency mining. Violators could face fines of up to 2 million rubles (approximately $25,000) and imprisonment of up to five years. Currently, around 50,000 individuals and entities are engaged in mining activities, yet fewer than 1,500 have registered. Meanwhile, Russia has expanded its mining ban to 13 regions—including the Republic of Buryatia and Zabaykalsky Krai in Siberia—with the ban set to remain in effect until 2031. The Minister of Energy for Moscow Oblast has also proposed banning mining in both Moscow city and Moscow Oblast, citing that local mining consumes approximately 1 GW of electricity and delivers no tangible economic benefit to the region. Russia previously legalized mining at the end of 2024 but requires miners to register with the Federal Tax Service and pay taxes accordingly.
