TechFlow News: On February 28, according to the Hong Kong Commercial Daily, the Hong Kong Police Force announced that it received 12,505 online shopping fraud cases in 2025—a rise of 8.2% compared to 2024. The single largest-loss online shopping fraud case involved cryptocurrency transactions. In this incident, the victim joined a Telegram-based cryptocurrency trading group and received a private message from a group member impersonating customer service for Bittwatt (BWT), who requested a “verification code” as a condition for group entry. Subsequently, the fraudster transferred all digital assets from the victim’s cryptocurrency wallet—already linked to their Telegram account—resulting in total losses exceeding HK$3.7 million. The police advised the public to contact customer service only through official channels when shopping online; to verify authenticity before making any payment regardless of transfer method; to carefully double-check payment details; and never to click on unknown or suspicious links.
