TechFlow news, on December 19, according to Hong Kong media Ming Pao, the Hong Kong District Court delivered a verdict in a USDT fraud case involving HK$2 million. Two 18-year-old youths were sentenced to training centers for carrying out the scam.
The case revealed that last November, a victim went to an exchange shop in Tsim Sha Tsui to purchase over HK$2 million worth of USDT. Following instructions, the victim handed cash to the two defendants and placed it into the shop's safe. After repeated requests for the USDT without success, the victim demanded a refund and discovered the cash was missing. Investigations revealed the safe shared a wall with a neighboring shop separated only by a black sheet of paper, creating a hidden passage through which the cash could be easily removed. The two defendants were arrested while attempting to escape via this passage.
Judge Margaret Cheng stated that although the two defendants were not masterminds, they played an indispensable "foot soldier" role in the fraud, which involved a substantial amount of money and clear premeditation. Considering both were only 18 years old at the time of the offense and had no criminal records, a training center sentence would be more conducive to rehabilitation than immediate imprisonment.
