TechFlow news, December 17 — Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin responded to U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders' call for a pause in the construction of large data centers for AI. Vitalik stated that there is merit in discussing a "slowdown" of AI development, but he believes a more valuable approach than a simple pause would be building a "pause button" capability—enabling a 90%–99% reduction in available computing power within 1–2 years at a more critical future moment. He also emphasized the need to distinguish between hyperscale computing clusters and consumer-grade AI hardware, expressing support for slowing the pace and promoting more decentralized progress, while noting that relevant regulatory measures could be easily circumvented and may not effectively achieve their goals.
