Four masked intruders disguised themselves as postal workers to gain entry into the victims' home, subjected the parents to waterboarding and physical assault, forced their 18-year-old daughter to take nude photographs, and through 13 hours of violent coercion, stole the family’s entire life savings—1.6 million dollars worth of Bitcoin.
A suspect from Hong Kong involved in the crime has been sentenced to seven years in prison, admitting he participated for a payment of 50,000 Canadian dollars. Three other suspects remain at large. Police warn that similar incidents may continue as organized criminals increasingly target cryptocurrency investors.
