TechFlow news, October 9 — Nick Turley, head of ChatGPT at OpenAI, recently revealed that the company plans to transform ChatGPT from a conversational tool into an operating system-like platform supporting third-party applications. With 800 million weekly active users currently, Turley said this transition will position ChatGPT as a hosting platform for various apps, including those for writing, programming, and interacting with goods and services.
OpenAI is collaborating with Jony Ive's team on hardware development and exploring ways to turn ChatGPT into a destination for e-commerce. Newly launched app features will allow developers direct access to ChatGPT's vast user base, enabling more interactive experiences.
On user privacy, OpenAI has released developer guidelines requiring apps to collect only essential user data and plans to introduce features like segmented memory, giving users finer control over data access permissions.
Turley emphasized that ChatGPT is not only part of OpenAI's business model but also the "delivery vehicle" for achieving its nonprofit mission—benefiting humanity through practical applications.
