It represents a new approach to data availability within sharded blockchains.
The NEAR engineering team recently announced a shift toward stateless validation—the next phase in sharding—which will further reduce hardware requirements for certain types of validators (block validators) by moving state into memory.
This means the number of shards can increase significantly, greatly boosting NEAR’s overall throughput.
While NEAR is already fast—each of its 4 shards capable of 4 MB/s—scaling to n shards means Rollups using NEAR won’t have to compete for block space.
As the NEAR protocol scales the number of shards to n, the amount of data each individual shard must store decreases. Ultimately, it becomes theoretically possible for every account on the NEAR protocol to become its own shard.
Although data availability sharding is still in research and development, it highlights the foundational advantages NEAR offers to builders and the broader ecosystem.
