KCC upgrade timeline confirmed, to be deployed on Goerli within two weeks
February mainnet promising?

On the evening of January 4, the 178th Ethereum core developer execution meeting (ACDE #178) was held online. During this session, developers finalized the proposed testnet Dencun upgrade timeline initially discussed at ACDE #177 on December 21, and also prioritized discussions regarding the subsequent Pectra upgrade roadmap.
Odaily Planet Daily note: The Dencun upgrade is actually a combined term for Deneb and Cancun—Deneb focusing on the consensus layer, while Cancun targets the execution layer. "Cancun" here refers to the long-anticipated “Kanqun” upgrade by the Ethereum and Layer 2 communities. Similarly, the Pectra upgrade combines Prague and Electra.

The host of this ACDE #178 session was not the familiar core developer Tim Beiko—who will return to host ACDE #179—but rather lightclient, a Geth team developer, who moderated in his place. According to lightclient’s meeting notes published earlier today, last night’s participants reached consensus on the Dencun upgrade testnet schedule.
Developers unanimously agreed to activate the Dencun upgrade on the Goerli testnet on January 17. Additionally, they preliminarily set January 30 and February 7 as the upgrade dates for the Sepolia and Holesky testnets, respectively.

While most developers considered this schedule slightly aggressive, it was generally acceptable. However, developer potuz1 raised explicit concerns, arguing that the 13-day gap between the Goerli and Sepolia testnet upgrades might be too short to adequately observe potential issues.
To quickly respond to any problems arising after the Goerli testnet upgrade, developers decided to hold ACDE #179 on January 18. If critical issues emerge within the first 24 hours post-upgrade, the team will have the opportunity to reevaluate the remaining schedule.
Notably, lightclient’s meeting notes did not mention a mainnet upgrade date. However, during ACDE #177, developers had discussed deploying the upgrade to mainnet as early as late February. Given that ACDE #178 did not delay the testnet rollout, this timeline remains feasible under ideal conditions.
In addition to the highly anticipated Dencun upgrade, developers also discussed priority planning for the future Pectra upgrade.
Regarding the Pectra upgrade, debate centered on whether to fully focus on Verkle tree implementation before proceeding, or to simultaneously advance smaller feature upgrades alongside Verkle improvements. Most developers favored prioritizing Verkle, but the Reth client team argued for advancing a minor feature upgrade first.
Lightclient also noted that Verkle represents at least a year-long effort, meaning that if prioritized, there would likely be no new execution layer (EL) features introduced over the next 12–24 months. Further ACDE meetings will include additional discussions and demonstrations on this topic.
In summary, the primary significance of ACDE #178 lies in finalizing the Dencun upgrade testnet schedule. On January 17, we’ll begin witnessing a new phase of the Ethereum ecosystem—starting with Goerli.
