TechFlow reports that on June 25, according to official announcements, the Sentient Foundation launched its “Open-Source Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) Grant and Investment Program,” pledging $42 million to support developers, researchers, and startups building and applying AGI in open ways—making it one of the largest dedicated commitments to open-source AGI to date.
The grant track targets researchers, open-source maintainers, independent developers, and public-interest projects. Funding requires no equity stake, asserts no ownership rights, and imposes no restrictions on the project’s future development. Grantees retain full ownership of their work products and knowledge contributions while receiving sustained financial support to continue building openly.
The investment track targets startups and teams commercializing open-source AI technologies. Investments will follow standard, founder-friendly structures designed to help promising teams scale operations—while enshrining openness as a core principle of their growth.
Applications will be evaluated across multiple dimensions: technical capability, ecosystem impact, degree of openness, and long-term potential. To guide program implementation, the Sentient Foundation is assembling an advisory council composed of seasoned members of the open-source AI community to jointly define funding priorities and ensure the program genuinely addresses the needs of the communities it serves.
The Sentient Foundation clarifies that applicants are not required to open-source every component of their technology stack. Instead, applicants must demonstrate that at least one critical component is openly available and makes a substantive contribution to the project’s value and adoption.
At launch, the program has already secured support from an expanding ecosystem network—including Alibaba Cloud, Franklin Templeton, Princeton University, and the Indian Institute of Science. Additional partners are expected to be announced over the coming months.
