TechFlow News, June 14: The U.S. government’s recent imposition of export controls on Anthropic’s advanced AI models Fable 5 and Mythos 5 has come to light.
According to reports, two days after Fable 5’s release, Andy Jassy expressed concerns to the White House, warning that the model’s safety guardrails could be circumvented, potentially enabling users to access high-risk capabilities that should not be publicly available.
Subsequently, several senior White House officials issued an ultimatum to Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, demanding the company voluntarily withdraw the relevant models within 90 minutes. Anthropic refused to comply.
After failing to reach agreement, the Trump administration ultimately invoked export control authority on national security grounds, imposing restrictions on Fable 5 and Mythos 5 and compelling Anthropic to halt related model services globally.
Anthropic subsequently issued a statement opposing the administrative intervention, arguing that the action lacked transparency and failed to adequately ground its decision-making in technical facts and risk assessments.
Notably, Amazon—not only voiced security concerns to the White House but is also Anthropic’s largest investor. Market observers view this incident as indicative of a shifting U.S. government stance toward regulating cutting-edge AI models, with national security considerations increasingly influencing the release and deployment of advanced models.
