TechFlow News, April 13: Iran submitted a legal document to the International Maritime Organization’s Legal Committee meeting, stating its position regarding the outcomes of the Council’s special session. Iran denied allegations of “blocking the Strait of Hormuz” and pointed out that external military operations are the root cause of the deteriorating maritime security situation in the Persian Gulf. It also stressed that any so-called “secure maritime corridor” arrangement must be approved by Iran.
Regarding international concerns over navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, Iran explicitly stated in the document that the Strait remains open to international navigation; however, due to the worsening security environment, associated risks have significantly increased. In response to proposals by certain countries to establish a “secure maritime corridor,” Iran emphasized that, as a littoral state of the Strait of Hormuz, it holds legally recognized rights over navigation safety and management in the relevant waters. Any shipping arrangements must be conducted only after full coordination with and explicit consent from Iran’s competent authorities; otherwise, such arrangements would constitute interference with the coastal state’s jurisdiction.
