TechFlow News, March 23: According to CoinDesk, the Ethereum ecosystem faces structural pressures across three dimensions—scaling roadmap, quantum security threats, and AI strategic positioning—as it enters a critical juncture for reevaluating its direction in early 2026.
On scaling, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has criticized existing Layer 2 (L2) solutions, noting that certain rollup implementations rely on centralized components and suffer from severe ecosystem fragmentation, failing to genuinely inherit Ethereum’s security and decentralization properties—and thus falling short of being truly effective Ethereum scaling solutions. The research firm 21Shares forecasts consolidation within the L2 space, with market share shifting toward networks that are highly aligned with Ethereum and offer superior performance.
Regarding quantum security, the Ethereum Foundation has incorporated post-quantum signature schemes and LeanVM research into its near-term roadmap; Buterin has also published a related roadmap, formally elevating quantum threats to a mid-term priority.
On AI, the Foundation positions Ethereum as the “trust layer” for decentralized AI systems, exploring its infrastructure role in enabling verifiable outputs and machine-to-machine economic activity.
