TechFlow News, March 3 — According to a Cointelegraph report, Ben Delo, co-founder of BitMEX, has pledged a £20 million (approximately $27 million) donation to the London Institute for Mathematical Sciences (LIMS), marking one of the largest private donations ever received by a UK research institution outside of Oxford and Cambridge. The donation comprises an immediate payment of $13.3 million and an additional $13.3 million in matching funds.
Previously, Delo pleaded guilty in 2022 to violating U.S. banking regulations and paid a $10 million fine; he subsequently received a presidential pardon from Donald Trump in March 2025. As a trustee of LIMS, Delo stated that he chose to support the institute because it enables leading researchers to focus exclusively on research without teaching or administrative responsibilities, while also criticizing the UK’s “lackluster and inconsistent science funding system.”
