TechFlow, October 31 — According to Jinshi Data, as the government shutdown nears one month, U.S. President Trump urged Senate Republicans to vote for abolishing the Senate's filibuster rule—"the filibuster." Trump posted late Thursday on social media: "Given that the Democrats have gone completely 'crazy,' the choice is clear—invoke the 'nuclear option,' eliminate the filibuster, and make America great again." Due to the Senate's filibuster rule, most legislation requires 60 votes to pass. While a majority can change these rules, both parties have largely refused to do so in order to preserve their ability to influence legislation when in the minority. In the recent funding standoff, Democrats refused to support the Republican-proposed temporary funding bill unless Republicans agreed to extend medical subsidies. This is not the first time Trump has called for eliminating the filibuster; during his first term, he repeatedly made such appeals after his legislative efforts were blocked in the Senate. Senate Republican Leader Thune said earlier this month that his party would not use the so-called "nuclear option" to advance the funding bill. When asked whether the White House was pushing for this move, Thune reiterated his opposition, stating, "We haven't discussed this topic."
