A New Wave of Retail Investors Enters the Market — Are They More Likely to Buy Pepe? Data Analysis from YouTube and Reddit
Robinhood remains a key liquidity gateway for retail investors.

As retail investors resume buying our cryptocurrencies, we need to consider some new factors that previously weren't as important. Retailers typically don't understand what TVL (Total Value Locked) means and rarely use Dune dashboards for analysis, so they don't buy tokens based on the nuanced analyses commonly shared on Crypto Twitter. Instead, they focus more on protecting their assets and chasing the legendary 1000x returns.
Below are the key factors to consider when understanding retail psychology and their purchasing motivations:
-
Financial nihilism: Many feel overwhelmed by the cost of living and diminishing opportunities for upward mobility, making them attracted to the potential of improving their financial situation.
-
Perception of high risk, high reward: They view cryptocurrency as a path to quick wealth.
-
Word-of-mouth momentum: Stories of turning $100 into $1 million often spark hype and attention.
-
Lack of knowledge: Retail investors often rely on those perceived as experts—such as anonymous users posing as gurus on Reddit or YouTube influencers.
-
Hundred-dollar warriors: Most are willing to invest $100, even if they might lose it, because it could potentially lead to massive wealth.
-
Accessibility: Apps like Robinhood make it easy for people to start trading via smartphones or computers.
Given these dynamics, I’ve been monitoring indicators of retail interest. YouTube and Reddit are popular platforms where new investors seek “investment secrets.” One metric worth watching is Subreddit membership growth, as Reddit’s user base skews heavily toward retail investors.
After analyzing numerous Subreddits, PEPE and BONK stand out with particularly significant membership growth.

In contrast, WIF and SHIB have seen slower growth:

Key findings from Reddit data:
-
The importance of Robinhood listings: Listings attract retail attention and capital inflows.
-
Price-per-unit bias: Retail investors tend to favor tokens with lower per-unit prices.
-
PEPE’s leadership position: PEPE has recently captured the most retail attention among meme coins.
Since its listing on Robinhood on November 13, PEPE’s Subreddit membership has surged, outpacing all other meme coins in growth. This indicates that Robinhood remains a critical liquidity gateway for retail investors. Although WIF was also listed on Robinhood shortly after November 25, its membership growth still lags behind both PEPE and BONK.

Retail preference for low-priced tokens is especially evident in Subreddit discussions and YouTube comments. Investors often boast about holding "100 million PEPE," rather than focusing on the actual dollar value of their investment. This mindset stems from a lack of understanding of market cap and fully diluted valuation (FDV)—many believe lower-priced tokens have more room to grow.

PEPE’s Subreddit is now the most active among this cycle’s meme coins, evident in its sustained membership growth. This trend is fueled by the popular narrative of “PEPE reaching $1”—equivalent to a 46,000x return. While clearly unrealistic, such stories mirror the narratives that once drove DOGE and SHIB rallies. Retailers rely heavily on word-of-mouth, creating a feedback loop: as prices rise, profit stories spread, attracting more participants. For example, one retail investor tells friends they’ve already tripled their money on PEPE but are still holding because “it’s too early.” The higher the price goes, the faster this message spreads.
If these trends continue on Reddit, Subreddit data will become a reliable source of alpha—an effective gauge of retail interest in a token. For now, PEPE appears to be the clear winner within this cohort, and a recovery in the Ethereum ecosystem could further accelerate this momentum.
